Tom Purwin has played in cover bands, big bands, rock
bands, jazz
bands, and as a solo jazz guitarist. He’s played everything from a
chord melody solo Jazz Guitar version of “Rainy Day” in Germany in
1978, to Michael Jackson/Van Halen’s “Beat It” or a jazz solo
guitar gig at an art show in Ridgewood, NJ.
After appearing
in clubs in Hudson, Bergen, Essex, and Monmouth Counties; he
studied Jazz Guitar for five years in Billy Taylor’s Jazz-Mobile
in Harlem, NY. He can be seen playing across the state of New
Jersey at various non-profit fund raising events, schools, Blues
Clubs, and Rock Clubs.
His guitar
influences include the Stones’ Mick Taylor, Albert King, Freddie
King, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Django, and Joe Pass. Other musical
influences include Rosemary Clooney, Lee Ritenour, Stephen
Grappelli, and Gato Barbieri. Contemporary musical influences
include Creed, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, and the Red Hot Chili
Peppers.
His favorite
instruments include a 1963 Cherry Gibson ES330, a 1979 Kramer XL7
(USA made in Neptune, NJ), a natural wood Pre-CBS (1964) Fender
Mustang, and a 2002 Carvin Classical Electric.
Dr. B & the Interns are a local NJ band playing bars,
